Before I saw you. . .

Days were bright
before I saw you.
Nights were starry,
skies wore blue.
Alas! Life was whole
before I saw you.

Winters never chilled this deep,
summers never seared my sleep.
Rains were kind,
they’d simply pour —
not drown the soul
as they do now, more.

It was parties, laughter, late-night fun,
excuses made when out past one.
Loud music filled my carefree space,
before your shadow took its place.

I’d cook for one,
I’d eat alone —
never waited by the phone.
And every storm had somewhere to go,
before you came
and made it snow.

You walked in —
a blaze, a song.
You walked out —
now everything’s wrong.

Smiles don’t land,
flowers don’t bloom.
Music is noise,
the stars left the room.

No friends, no party,
just silence in motion.
Only questions,
no emotion.

Why separation,
O why this ache?
Even death won’t come —
for heartbreak’s sake.
